Profile

Dr. Zhao received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of South Carolina in 2014. In 2015, he joined Institute of Photonics and Photon-Technology, Northwest University as an associate professor till now.

As a theoretical and experimental researcher, Dr. Zhao has broad interests covering optics, micro/nanofluidics, turbulence, nonlinear physics and their interdisciplinary fields. During the past years, he has made a series of achievements in various fields. For instance, he and his collaborators have realized turbulent mixing in an electrokinetic (EK) microfluidic device with a low bulk flow Reynolds number. They reported the existence of Kolmogorov spectrum and Obukhov-Corrsin spectrum in the turbulent flow field of EK micromixer. Then, he established Zhao-Wang model for EK turbulence in 2017. In 2022, he further established a general model of quad-cascade process for momentum-scalar coupling turbulence.

His current major research interests include novel super-resolution imaging and fabrication techniques for bio/nanophotonics, optical field modulation, micro/nanofluidics devices for biomedical and chemical engineering, electrokinetic turbulence and complex physical systems, diagnostic instruments for chemistry, biology and fluid mechanics etc. With novel optical and fluidic techniques, he hopes to develop fascinating platforms and devices, to solve fundamental problems in physics, fluid mechanics and medical science.

Dr. Zhao has been granted/joined 3 fundings supported by NSFC and several fundings supported by Shaanxi province. The total He has published more than 75 SCI/EI papers in multidisciplinary journals, e.g. Lab on a Chip, Optics Letters, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Review Fluids/E, AIChE journal and etc. He has also applied for and been granted 10 patents. Recently, he has been serving as a guest editor for Micromachines and Frontiers in Physics.
