Description of Publication:The most ventral cells of the vertebrate neural tube, thefloor plate, comprise a specialized group of cells distinct in form and function from the rest of the neural tube. These cells have been ascribed many functions, ranging from the differentiation of motor neurons that innervate specific muscle cell types in the body, to providing cues for the correct path-finding of various axons. Here, we summarize the process by which the floor plate develops in a few model vertebrate organisms, the various functions of the floor plate, and the molecular nature of signals emanating from the floor plate. Finally, we assess the prevailing models of how the cells of the floor plate are thought to arise
